Carbon Dynamics Along the Seine River Network: Insight From a Coupled Estuarine/River Modeling Approach ArchiMer
Laruelle, Goulven G.; Marescaux, Audrey; Le Gendre, Romain; Garnier, Josette; Rabouille, Christophe; Thieu, Vincent.
The Seine river discharges over 700 Gg of carbon (C) every year into the sea mostly under the form of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and emits 445 Gg under the form of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere over its entire river network. The watershed, which drains 76,000 km2, is heavily populated with 18 106 inhabitants and is thus submitted to large anthropic pressure. The offline coupling of two Reactive Transport Models is used to understand the complex spatial and temporal dynamics of carbon, oxygen and nutrients and quantify the CO2 exchange at the air-water interface along the main axis of the river. The estuarine section of the Seine is simulated by the generic estuarine model C-GEM (for Carbon Generic Estuarine Model), while the upstream part of...

EMOSEM Final Report - Ecosystem Models as Support to Eutrophication Management In the North Atlantic Ocean ArchiMer
Desmit, Xavier; Lacroix, Geneviève; Thieu, Vincent; Menesguen, Alain; Dulière, Valerie; Campuzano, Francisco; Billen, Gilles; Neves, Ramiro; Lancelot, Christiane; Gypens, Nathalie; Dussauze, Morgan; Garnier, Josette; Silvestre, Marie; Passy, Paul; Lassaletta, Luis; Guittard, Gabriel; Théry, Sylvain; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Garcia, Carla; Pinto, Ligia; Sobrinho, Joao; Mateus, Marco; Ascione Kenov, Isabella.
One of the leading challenges in marine science and governance is to improve scientific guidance of management measures to mitigate eutrophication nuisances in the EU seas. Too few approaches integrate the eutrophication process in space (continuum river-ocean) and in time (past, present and future status). A strong need remains for (i) knowledge/identification of all the processes that control eutrophication and its consequences, (ii) consistent and harmonized reference levels assigned to each eutrophication-related indicator, (iii) identification of the main rivers directly or indirectly responsible for eutrophication nuisances in specific areas, (iv) an integrated transboundary approach and (v) realistic short term and long term nutrient reduction...

How to avoid eutrophication in coastal seas? A new approach to derive river-specific combined nitrate and phosphate maximum concentrations ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain; Desmit, Xavier; Duliere, Valerie; Lacroix, Genevieve; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Thieu, Vincent; Dussauze, Morgan.
Since 1950, increase in nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) river loadings in the North-East Atlantic (NEA) continental seas has induced a deep change in the marine coastal ecosystems, leading to eutrophication symptoms in some areas. In order to recover a Good Ecological Status (GES) in the NEA, as required by European Water Framework Directive (WFD) and Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), reductions in N- and P-river loadings are necessary but they need to be minimal due to their economic impact on the farming industry. In the frame of the “EMoSEM” European project, we used two marine 3D ecological models (ECO-MARS3D, MIRO&CO) covering the Bay of Biscay, the English Channel and the southern North Sea to estimate the contributions of various...

Le Continuum Homme-Terre-Mer ArchiMer
Garnier, Josette; Castelle, Bruno; Labille, Jérôme; Souchu, Philippe; Thieu, Vincent; Delacourt, Christophe.

Managing the Agri-Food System of Watersheds to Combat Coastal Eutrophication: A Land-to-Sea Modelling Approach to the French Coastal English Channel ArchiMer
Garnier, Josette; Riou, Philippe; Le Gendre, Romain; Ramarson, Antsiva; Billen, Gilles; Cugier, Philippe; Schapira, Mathilde; Théry, Sylvain; Thieu, Vincent; Ménesguen, Alain.
The continental coastal waters of the Eastern Channel, from Normandy to Hauts-de-France, are subject to the major influence of unbalanced nutrient inputs from inflowing rivers. Several episodes of harmful algal blooms (HABs) compromising fishing and shellfish farming activities have been observed at the coast. For a better understanding of how the land-to-sea aquatic continuum functions, the GRAFS-RIVERSTRAHLER river biogeochemical model was implemented to cover the watersheds of 11 rivers flowing into this area (including the Seine) and chained with the ecological marine ECO-MARS3D model, applied to the French Northern coastal zone. Human activities strongly impact on the functioning of coastal ecosystems. Specifically, for these fertile soils of Northern...

Scénarios prospectifs du système agro-alimentaire du bassin de la Seine à l’horizon 2040 ArchiMer
Billen, Gilles; Garnier, Josette; Ramarson, Antsiva; Romero, Estela; Thieu, Vincent; Le Noe, Julia; Silvestre, Marie; Thery, Sylvain; Barles, Sabine; Bognon, Sabine; Castaings, Jerome; Legendre, Romain; Riou, Philippe; Bacq, Nicolas; Fisson, Cédric.
